Award of Excellence: The great-grandson of a nazi
November 11, 2024

Max Herold from Germany never knew what his great-grandfather did during the holocaust. After his great-grandmother died he began to look back into his family's history and found letters and pictures that had been hidden away for many years. One photo shows a young soldier in uniform. His great-grandfather Herbert during the second world war in Germany. Through double exposure, similarities in the facial features of Max and Herbert are visible. But they are only similar in appearance. – I understand that my family was part of the Third Reich. Some people say that they have no responsibility for what happened. It wasn't us, the young generation, who did it. I feel that that may be true, but that we have a responsibility to understand and process history. The silence made a lot possible in Germany. And the silence remains, says Max.
